The ability of individuals with visual impairments to access healthcare services and navigate healthcare facilities safely is essential for achieving equality and full participation in society. In pharmacies, medical practices, hospitals, and health centers, the presence of appropriate accessibility infrastructure is not a luxury, but a necessary condition for creating an inclusive environment.

At Accessibility Support Academy, we firmly believe that creating safe and fully accessible healthcare spaces for all is a prerequisite for promoting equality and social inclusion.
We provide comprehensive accessibility solutions for buildings, businesses, and organizations, combining architectural innovation, technological applications, and educational support. Our primary goal is to ensure comfortable and independent navigation within healthcare facilities and beyond.
Accessibility in Pharmacies
Pharmacies, as central pillars of healthcare provision, must function as accessible healthcare spaces that serve all individuals on equal terms. The need for safe and accessible navigation within the building is critical. Physical accessibility alone is not sufficient. Every pharmacy must ensure that individuals with visual impairments can be served independently and safely, without relying on the assistance of others.
Best Practice Example: The Pharmacy of Zoi Damaskou
An outstanding example of accessibility implementation is the pharmacy of Ms. Zoi Damaskou, which we fully upgraded to serve individuals with visual impairments in the most modern and effective way. The goal of Accessibility Support Academy was to create a friendly and safe environment that allows customers with visual impairments to move independently and receive the services they need without barriers.
Assessment of Existing Accessibility Conditions
The first phase of our project involved evaluating the existing accessibility of the building. Through a detailed analysis of the infrastructure and layout, we identified areas requiring improvement. We examined spatial configuration, movement routes, adequacy of lighting and sound, and the way customers interact with pharmacy staff.
Development of an Accessibility Study for the Pharmacy
Following the assessment, we proceeded with the development of a comprehensive accessibility study for the space. This study included both architectural and technological solutions required to make the pharmacy fully accessible and functional for individuals with visual impairments. The design focused on creating safe navigation routes and easy access to all areas of the pharmacy, while ensuring smooth and comfortable interaction between customers, staff, and infrastructure.
Key Accessibility Interventions
- Installation of tactile guiding paths at strategic points. These non-slip guides allow individuals with visual impairments to navigate the pharmacy safely while avoiding potential hazards.
- Addition of Braille labels at the checkout counter and the intercom area, enabling easy identification of essential service-related information.
- Use of color contrast at the pharmacy entrance and checkout area to improve navigation, especially for individuals with partial vision loss.
- Installation of a Beacon system, allowing customers with visual impairments to locate the pharmacy entrance using a smartphone, making access easier and more intuitive.
- Development of an accessible website, a core pillar of the pharmacy’s upgrade. Following accessibility standards, the website is fully compatible with screen readers, allowing individuals with visual impairments to access all information about the pharmacy and its services.
Accessibility Training Programs for Staff
An additional key step in completing the project was the training of pharmacy staff. Through comprehensive accessibility training programs, employees acquired specialized knowledge and skills in escorting techniques and customer service for individuals with visual impairments. The goal of this training was to ensure optimal service delivery, creating an environment that is not only friendly and safe, but fully accessible to everyone.

Creating accessible healthcare environments is essential for the equal participation of individuals with visual impairments in society. At the pharmacy of Ms. Zoi Damaskou, we combined physical and digital accessibility solutions, ensuring that all customers—whether with or without disabilities—can access high-quality healthcare services with complete safety and comfort.
The success of this project is the result of excellent collaboration between companies and accessibility professionals. Each stage was based on their experience and expertise, driven by a shared commitment to equality and improved quality of life. This collaboration led to the development and implementation of solutions that integrate technology, architecture, and a human-centered approach, creating a model example of accessibility.
